What are the 2017 San Diego Ben Vereen Awards?

The 2017 San Diego Ben Vereen Awards competition event will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, CA. Finalists from participating schools are nominated as Best Actor/Best Actress candidates for their portrayal of leading roles in their high school’s musical theatre production. We begin the evening with 10 Male and 10 Female Nominees. By the end of the evening, 1 Male Champion and 1 Female Champion will be selected to represent the 2017 San Diego Ben Vereen Awards at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) in New York.

What are the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA)?

The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) is a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater that recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance, and honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to performing arts education. NHSMTA focuses much needed attention on the meaningful work being done by dedicated teachers and real kids with wide ranging talents on and off the stage; engages families in the activities of their children; ignites new partnerships between theaters and the schools in their area, and contributes to the development of future audiences for live performing arts in communities across America.

The 2017 San Diego Ben Vereen Awards champions (one male and one female), will compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Award in New York City in June of 2017. The San Diego winners will join dozens of other finalists from regional competitions across the country for a week long experience called Camp Broadway, which includes rehearsals, workshops and lectures and field trips, designed to prepare the students for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA)/Jimmy™ Awards, which will take place in June of 2017 at  a Broadway Theatre (TBD). The Broadway League will now be overseeing the centralized operations of this program.

What are the Jimmy Awards®?

The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) also known as the Jimmy Awards® is a competition to identify the most talented high school musical theater actor and actress in the country. Regional competitions are held in 30+markets; each region sends their best actor & actress to New York for a week of intensive training.  The final competition will be held in June of 2017 New York at a Broadway Theater (TBD). Here the winning actor and actress will be crowned, and they will each win $10,000 towards a college scholarship.

How Can My School Participate?

Up to 30 schools/productions will be accepted to the 2017 Ben Vereen Awards competition on a first come first served basis. The process begins when the completed application and invoice are submitted by the Teacher/Director from your high school. The application and invoice are available on the “How to Apply” tab of this website.

How Can I Attend the Event?

Adjudications of San Diego County High School Musicals will take place from September 2016 through April 2017. The 2017 Ben Vereen Awards competition event will take place on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Balboa Theatre.
