What To Prepare
Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees – Music:
For the adjudication process and for performance at the 2017 Ben Vereen Awards San Diego competition, all Best Actor/Best Actress Nominees will be asked to prepare an edited 2 1/2 minute version of a song from their nominated performance and an edited 2 1/2 minute contrasting piece not from their nominated performance. Utilizing Dropbox, we will ask you to submit electronic copies of the sheet music with the selected cuts in advance so that the Ben Vereen Awards Musical Director/Accompanist can become familiar with the music.
Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees – Clothes:
No costumes, sets or props are allowed at the competition. Contestants are required to provide two different performance outfits at the competition.
The first is a “dress blacks” outfit, with long sleeve black shirts, black slacks and black dress shoes for the boys. For the girls, the look is a “little black dress” with a modest skirt length and black dress shoes with a modest heel. You will be taught opening and closing numbers with music and choreography that will be performed in your dress blacks, so you need to be able to move in them.
The second required outfit is a “Red Carpet” look. For the boys, this means a nice dress suit or tux. For the girls this is a chance to show off your very best formal dress. Prom dresses are acceptable if they are elegant and not too revealing. You will be performing your solo pieces in your Red Carpet look.
Best Musical Nominees:
Up to five schools nominated for Best Musical will be asked to perform one large production number from their show during the San Diego Competition. As with the Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees, the nominations for Best Musical are based on the numerical scores from the onsite adjudications by the local San Diego judges. During the San Diego Competition it will be the panel of VIP judges who will choose the winner of the Best Musical Award based on the live presentations that evening. The selected musical number should capture the character and spirit of the production and should include a large number of ensemble members. There will be a maximum performance time of five minutes. The selected musical production number must be approved in advance by the Ben Vereen Awards Production Team.
Best Musical Nominees must provide their own piano accompanist. Preferably, this will be someone who has worked on the production and is very familiar with show. Bands, orchestras and pre-recorded tracks are not allowed. Schools may not make special lighting, scenic or sound requests. Best Musical Nominee presentations must be done without sets, costumes or props. A uniform look of show t-shirts, black pants, and black shoes is suggested. Dressing rooms will not be provided.
All Best Musical Nominee cast members will be required to attend a dress/tech rehearsal earlier in the day on the day of performance. The exact times/rehearsal schedules TBD. The Teacher/Director and the Accompanist are expected to be at both the dress/tech rehearsal and the performance. Best Musical Nominee cast members will be able to sit in the audience until it is time for their performance.
The winner of the Best Musical Award will receive a trophy for display at the school and a check for $1,000. The Teacher/Director of the winning production will be invited on stage to receive these honors. Please note, the Best Musical Nominees will only perform at the San Diego Competition.
